Plumbers in the GTA: Repairs, Water Heaters & Rough-Ins
Last updated · Filteraty Editorial
Plumbing is a compulsory trade in Ontario: the person working on your drains and supply lines should hold a plumber’s Certificate of Qualification, checkable by name in a free public register. GTA costs run from small repairs and fixture swaps through water heater replacements to the major rough-ins that anchor bathroom and basement projects.
| Scope | Typical range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Repair or fixture swap | $300–$1,500 | Faucet repair/replacement, drain clearing, toilet swap, single small fixture |
| Water heater or mid-scope | $1,200–$2,800 | Tank-style water heater replacement ($1.2k–$1.8k installed), vanity rough-in, one new drain or supply run |
| Tankless or major rough-in | $3,500–$8,500 | Tankless water heater installed ($5k–$8.5k), new bathroom rough-in, main drain stack, significant new supply lines |
Compiled from published GTA contractor pricing (HomeStars, Houzz Canada, habitualhomes.ca, davidreno.ca, among others). The same dataset powers Filteraty’s AI assessment, so this page and your assessment can never quote different numbers. Cost drivers: Tankless water heater ($5k–$8.5k) vs tank ($1.2k–$1.8k), different scopes entirely. Moving plumbing fixtures $1.5k–$5k each. Access difficulty (finished walls, concrete slab) adds 25–40%. All gas line work requires TSSA-licensed contractor.
How much does plumbing work cost in the GTA?
The table above shows the three quoted classes: repairs and single-fixture swaps; water heater replacement and mid-scope jobs; and the top tier where tankless conversions and new rough-ins live. Water heaters illustrate the spread inside one job type: a like-for-like tank swap sits mid-table, while going tankless multiplies the price through venting, gas-line and water-treatment work.
Emergency calls price differently than planned work, carrying an urgency premium plus after-hours rates, which is one more reason the "small leak I’ll deal with later" is the most expensive kind: it chooses its own timing.
How do you verify a plumber in Ontario?
Two checks, one for the person and one for the business. Plumbing is a compulsory trade: the individual doing the work should hold a plumber’s Certificate of Qualification or be a registered apprentice under one, searchable by name and free, in Skilled Trades Ontario’s public register. In Toronto, the business itself must also hold the city’s plumbing and heating contractor licence.
This two-layer structure is worth understanding because it is where corners get cut: a licensed business sending an uncertified worker, or a certified individual operating without the municipal business licence. A company comfortable naming both the certificate holder on your job and the business licence has nothing to hide.

Tank or tankless: which water heater makes sense in the GTA?
A tank swap is the budget answer and usually right when the current setup works: lower cost, same-day install, known behavior. Tankless earns its multiple when you are out of hot water regularly, want the floor space, or are renovating anyway. But it is a small project, not a swap: venting, gas line sizing and often water treatment for GTA water hardness are part of the honest quote.
Also ask what you own: much of the GTA runs on rented water heaters, and buyout or return terms on the rental contract can change the economics of the whole decision before a wrench turns. Gas-fired units add one more credential to the job, because the gas side needs TSSA-certified hands.

When is a plumbing problem an emergency?
When water is moving and you cannot stop it: a burst supply line, sewage backing up, a failed shut-off during another repair. First move in every case is the main shut-off valve, and you should find yours today rather than during the flood. Then the call. Everything else, including most "no hot water" and slow-drain situations, is urgent-but-schedulable, which prices meaningfully better than emergency dispatch.
Basement sewer backup after heavy rain is its own GTA category: often a municipal-surcharge interaction where a backwater valve is the real fix. That conversation belongs with a plumber who does drain work and knows local subsidy programs many municipalities run for exactly this installation.
How does Filteraty match you with a plumber?
Describe the problem. Photos of the fixture, the leak or the mechanical room speed everything up, and for emergencies say so plainly. Filteraty then matches you with screened GTA plumbing contractors whose verification records show what was checked, against which registry, and on what date. You compare quotes, then contract and pay your plumber directly. Filteraty is not a party to that contract and takes nothing from the price you agree.
Common questions
Does a small plumbing repair need a certified plumber?
Work on your plumbing systems for hire is compulsory-trade territory regardless of job size, and small jobs are where uncertified work concentrates. You can swap your own faucet as a homeowner; someone you pay to work on drains and supply lines should be certificate-checkable in the public register.
Why is moving a fixture so much more expensive than replacing one?
Replacement reuses the rough-in: the drains and supply already in the floor and wall. Moving a fixture means new rough-in: opened floors, re-sloped drains, sometimes structural coordination. It is the same rule that governs bathroom renovation pricing: water location is what you pay to change.
What causes low water pressure in older GTA homes?
The classic culprit is original galvanized steel supply piping, which corrodes shut from the inside over decades. If pressure is poor everywhere and worst on hot, replacement with copper or PEX is the durable fix and repriceable room by room. A plumber who proposes investigating before proposing repiping is showing you good judgment.
Is a floor drain backup my problem or the city’s?
The line on your property is yours; the main under the street is the city’s, and diagnosis is a camera inspection, not a guess. If backups coincide with heavy rain, ask about a backwater valve and check your municipality’s subsidy program before paying for one; several GTA cities rebate a meaningful share of the installation.
